Click on any of the year pages listed below - each page has a list of the must-see films from that year. The first two categories (TOP TIER and ESSENTIAL VIEWING) represent "the greatest films" and "may very well be great, as well," respectively. The FURTHER INVESTIGATION category is for films that could be promoted to either category, but I'm not sure yet. FURTHER INVESTIGATION is also for films that aren't really very good, but you should see them anyway - often because the film adds to one's overall understanding of a given auteur. It might not be fair to fail to make the distinction within that category, but making further subdivisions seems like an exercise in futility.
